Common Project Management Mistakes Those of us who manage projects are always looking for better ways to plan, implement and track their progress. Steve McConnell's blog article "Classic Mistakes Enumerated" contains a comprehensive list of how projects go awry, including brief explanations of each problem. The piece was written for software developers, but 95 percent of it is relevant to just about any large project. The article is divided into the following sections: people, process, product and technology. McConnell writes, "High-level project sponsorship is necessary to support many aspects of rapid development including realistic planning, change control, and the introduction of new development practices. Without an effective project sponsor, other high-level personnel in your organization can force you to accept unrealistic deadlines or make changes that undermine your project." In the process section, he says, "Projects make plans and then routinely abandon them when they run into schedule trouble (Humphrey 1989). The problem isn't so much in abandoning the plan as in failing to create a substitute...." |

Participate in IAMC's Online Business Networking Stay "linked in" year-round with fellow IAMC members through IAMC's LinkedIn online business networking group, which is open exclusively to members. Once you join, you can post discussion items for group input and share your knowledge by answering others' questions. If you're not periodically checking IAMC's discussion group, you're missing some great CREM Q&A. In response to Craig Brace's question, "At the Spring Forum, Chuck Sullivan will present 'New Economic Realities - A Review of the Past 18 Months.' Going forward, have you seen evidence of solid recovery yet?," Lea Yaest writes:
At a luncheon today, Ben Bernanke spoke, and the message was relatively positive. Personally, I'm feeling business pick up, but making a profit continues to be a challenge.

Find a Real Estate Job; Post an Opening; Post a Resume
Go to the IAMC Career Center to read about dozens of corporate real estate, economic development and real estate service provider jobs. Here's an example: Manager I, Engineering and Facilities, for Kellogg Company. The job description says the position is "responsible for environmental compliance; leads and directs the continuous technical improvement of the facility, equipment, and production/IT systems in support of plant business goals; and prepares, justifies, and manages accurate engineering/facilities expense/capital (LSR) budgets with appropriate accounting information." |
Short Subjects
Resource Covers Economic Development Financing and Incentives
- Economic developers and corporations shopping for sites often need specific information on state and federal-level incentive programs for retention, new jobs, fresh investments and the like. To fill the need, a press release reports, "The CDFA-C2ER State Business Finance & Incentives Resource Center is a national database with more than 1,700 programs from all 50 states and federal agencies. Programs are catalogued and searchable by state, type (i.e. bonds, grants, loans, loan guarantees, tax credits, etc.), category (i.e. tax, direct business financing, indirect business finance, etc.), and business need. In addition, members can export and download selected material to their desktop." The database is open to members of the sponsoring organizations.
Manufacturing Still a Great Fit for U.S. Economy
- On the role of manufacturing in the U.S. economy, everyone seems to have an opinion. Some are well informed; many are not. Ralph Gomery's article "The Innovation Delusion" wades into the fracas with some interesting points. For instance, he writes, "We cannot continue to have our corporations, faithful only to the interests of their shareholders, engage in a one-way flow of jobs, technology, and innovation out of the country. We need to realize that with globalization the interests of our country and of our global corporations have diverged. We can realign the interests of corporations with those of our country by rewarding companies that are productive here."
Correction
- In the April 6 issue of IAMC Notes, in the article "Commercial Lease Review Checklists" the final URL link was incorrect. The correct link is now in place. Click here for the revised article. We regret the error.
